Brooklyn HeartyNHB is an artist exploring the experiential nature of the spiritual and the possibility of encounters with non-human intelligence. Working across painting and graphic art, Hearty creates recognizable but nonrealistic figures and unusual symbolic forms intended to evoke the emotional qualities of encounters that challenge ordinary perception.
The work develops intuitively, guided by the feeling an image produces rather than a predetermined symbolic system. Ancient deities, uncanny beings, and unfamiliar presences become points of departure for an art concerned less with illustrating beliefs than with giving form to experience.
For Hearty, the spiritual is encountered firsthand.
