Offering for Ishtar is a canvas print of original, human-made artwork by the artist Brooklyn HeartyNHB.
A bowl of orange and yellow fruit sits against a vivid green background. Dark, winding marks cover a yellow surface, while a pale, pointed form with radiating dark lines occupies the right side of the composition.
Artist’s statement
Offering for Ishtar explores the possibility of encounter between human beings and non-human intelligence. The eight-pointed star associated with Ishtar becomes an eye with eight appendages, transforming a familiar symbol into an unfamiliar presence.
The offering of fruit is an act of catering to this intelligence in the hope of receiving favor. My figures remain recognizable but depart from realism, reflecting my interest in evoking the felt experience of encounters that challenge ordinary perception.
For me, the spiritual is experiential. Symbols can point toward an encounter, but they cannot replace it.
